Tourtière du Lac: a dish to discover together
The regional version combines pieces of meat and potatoes beneath pastry in a deep dish. It differs from the ground-meat pies found elsewhere in Québec. Try a restaurant serving or ask about prepared takeaway versions. If you buy one for the chalet, follow the seller’s preparation instructions.
Blueberries: fresh, in a pie or in a jar
Try wild blueberries in different forms rather than limiting yourself to one pastry. Fresh berries, a pie and jam offer three different experiences. A spread can accompany breakfast at the chalet, while a pie is easy to share after dinner. Outside harvest season, ask which products are available rather than assuming you will find fresh fruit.
Soupe aux gourganes: try something less familiar
Gourganes are broad beans, and broad-bean soup is one of the region’s specialties. If you have never tried it, make it your discovery of the day when you find it on a menu. It is a way to vary your meals between outings. Check what is being served: not every restaurant offers every specialty all the time.
Cheeses: an easy tasting to arrange
In La Baie, Fromagerie Boivin offers cheese curds and a range of cheddars. For a chalet tasting, choose two or three products with different textures, then add bread and whichever accompaniments you enjoy. The idea is to discover a producer rather than buy everything. Follow the package instructions for transport and storage.
Microbreweries and local products
The region also has microbreweries, producers and food artisans. Make them an outing of their own or choose a few local products while shopping. Build the experience around your tastes: a regional meal, a cheese or a sweet treat is enough to start. The Tourisme Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean directory helps you find businesses along your route.
A stop in La Baie: Fromagerie Boivin
Fromagerie Boivin is at 2152 chemin Saint-Joseph in La Baie. Its website presents its products, snack bar and dairy counter. Consider a stop to buy cheese or try its poutine, depending on the current offering. Check the snack bar and counter hours before leaving, as services may have different schedules. Save this stop for the way back from an outing and bring a few finds home for the evening.
A Lac-Saint-Jean detour: Délices du Lac-Saint-Jean
In Albanel, Délices du Lac-Saint-Jean has a shop and a discovery space dedicated to wild blueberries. Its jams and other products offer ideas for trying the fruit in different ways. This stop is part of a Lac-Saint-Jean excursion: it is not in La Baie or right beside the chalet. Check the drive, opening hours and visit arrangements before adding Albanel to your day.
When should you come for fresh blueberries?
Délices du Lac-Saint-Jean generally places the season from late July to early September, depending on the weather. Dates and availability vary, so ask before planning a harvest-related outing. At other times of year, consider processed or frozen products. You can keep a food theme without making the whole trip depend on fresh berries.
A food day without rushing around
Our suggestion from La Baie: start with a walk, plan one food stop and bring back ingredients for dinner at the chalet. For a Lac-Saint-Jean day, group visits in the same area instead of adding repeated detours. Choose your route and open businesses first, then leave part of the day free to enjoy the fjord.
Québec classics to round out your discoveries
If your trip also takes you to Québec City, Montréal or Charlevoix, leave room for other classics. Our Québec food guide presents eight ideas to try along the way. It helps you separate regional specialties from discoveries elsewhere on your route without creating an overly packed meal schedule.
The pleasure of dining back by the fjord
Food discoveries do not require a restaurant visit every evening. At Domaine des Petites Marées or Contre vents et marées, the equipped kitchen lets you prepare a meal and share your finds. Make a shopping list first: a main dish, a side and dessert may be enough. The businesses and activities mentioned are independent; no meals, purchases or food packages are included in the rental.
